Elektra's Curiosities
Quirky Curations & Handmade Oddities
Our materials make us unique! Each of my whimsical windchimes, suncatchers, dangly trinkets and baubles are crafted with a touch of enchantment and a dash of love. Each piece is handmade here in the Silicon Valley from recycled, reclaimed, vintage, and natural materials. Materials are procured fair trade and sustainably by other artisans around the globe as much as possible: from here in California to remote tribes in Ghana or Nepal!
Some of our metal, ceramic, wood, or plastic beads have been scavenged from long-forgotten vintage jewelry and repurposed to create something new and loved!
Natural vertebrae come from local fishermen, roadkill, or animals that passed away naturally and humanely in sanctuary. These are most often cleaned by myself after being sourced from people in my community.
Brightly dyed bone beads are made by craftsmen in remote villages in Nepal, India, and West Africa. They come from cattle and fish- instead of just eating the meat of an animal, every part can be used.
Recycled glass beads are made by the Krobo People of Ghana, Africa. Powder glass beads are made by crushing old glass bottles to a fine powder and heating it so that the particles fuse together.
Czech glass-makers have long perfected uranium glass. The glass beads may have a greenish yellow hue, or sometimes appear blue and brown, that would glow a bright neon yellow under blacklight. Fortunately for us, these beads contain such a low concentration of uranium, they pose no health hazard!
